Song Of The Week #10

Posted by HeavenDuff Sep. 27, 2009 @ 4:17 PM EDT

.

Artist : Agalloch
Track : The Wilderness

On youtube, the track can only be found in two parts because it is too long to upload it as one track. This track is one of the four tracks found on the album From Which of this Oak. This album is considered as their one and only Atmospheric Black Metal album. The band being most of the time classifed as an Atmospheric Doom Folk Metal band for all of their other albums. I see The Wilderness and This Old Cabin as two of the best black metal tracks ever recorded (IMO) along with Ulver's early work. Even though I know they are not straight down black metal.

Anyway. I see Agalloch's work as a Masterpiece. Everything they touch turns to gold. It is sad though that they didn't go deeper in the black metal scene before recording their awesome Doom Folk albums.

Artist : Iron Maiden
Track : Different World

I remember when this track first came out in 2006 on the album A Matter of Life and Death I really did enjoy it. And I recently heard this track again while lurking around on YouTube and I just fell in love with it again. This track contains the pure essence of Iron Maiden. Awesome Heavy Metal guitar riffs with the powerful bass line of Steve Harris and the very melodic and catchy chorus ending with high-pitch vocals by the great Bruce Dickinson.

Artist : Ulver
Track : Lost In Moments

Ulver is a Norwegian band. The three musicians have started their musical career as a Black/Folk Metal band. Their 3 first albums are renowned as being some of the best albums of the black metal scene. Lost In Moments is not a track from their first albums though. Even if they did start as a Metal band, their music as evolved into something different. Perdition City is a record of Ambient Electronica music. Lost In Moments may be my favorite track on the record. It's an awesome track with slow transitions, a very relaxing sound and some nice trip hop beats. The different instruments used for the track really creates a great ambience. Everything Ulver as done is pure gold, even as they evolved to something very different from their original work, they kept that special feeling only Ulver as.

Artist : Agalloch
Track : Falling Snow

My Song Of The Week #1 was The Misshapen Steed by the same band. I consider Agalloch to be the best to be found in music today. And I thought that only choosing one song by them was not enough, but I couldn't choose a single title by them, because all they write is so perfect and marvellous. So I have decided to post the first track that I ever heard of them, which is Falling Snow. The atmosphere, the ambience created by the various sounds made by the guitars is just magic. The riffs are awesome and even the very simple drum lines are fitting perfectly in this song. And what would this title be without the awesome bass line? It would still be great, but not as perfect as it is for real. Agalloch is the Pink Floyd of Atmospheric Metal.

Artist : Blotted Science
Track : Amnesia

With Ron Jarzombek from Spastic Ink and Watchtower at the guitar, the powerful bassist Alex Webster from Cannibal Corpse and Hate Eternal, from the awesome band Behold... the Arctopus, Charlie Zeleny on the drums, Blotted Science are in my opinion the leaders of the Death Metal scene. They lead with great technicality and agressivity, they make the Technical Death Metal scene catch on fire.

I chose the title Amnesia because there is a great bass intro in this song and the song gets even better when the drum and guitar kicks in. Even if Amnesia is a very short title, all the power and talent of Blotted Science can be felt in this track.

Song Of The Week #5

Artist : Anthelion
Track : Grave Ocean

Anthelion, a band from Taiwan, is more than just another band of the great genre of music named Symphonic Black Metal. Anthelion brings the genre to an higher level. The great use of synths and keyboards in their music is giving all the signification to the word Symphonic. Still with all the great melodic riffs and tremolo picking, they keep their music in the Black Metal genre. The track Grave Ocean comes right after the piano track named Without Trepidation and is better when listenned to with the intro. Without Trepidation is in my opinion, a very good piano title and sets the table for an awesome 7 minutes long Symphonic Black Metal. This band is a must for any Illnath or Cradle Of Filth fan.
Great ambience, and awesome progression. All their tracks, except for their piano titles are 5 minutes or longer.

On another note, the drummer's corpse paint is great!

Song Of The Week #4

Artist : Bloc Party
Track : Helicopter

Helicopter is probably the most popular song by Bloc Party. The song can be played in Guitar Hero III : Legends of Rock and can also be heard in the movie Yes Man. Bloc Party can be classified as Indie Rock or Alternative Rock. This track is particularly good because of the fast tempo, great energy and very nice guitar leads. The song starts really quickly with the first guitar riff, then the drum joins and the bass starts to play a very nice part of the rythmic section of the song. Even if the riff is quite simple, it's fitting very well in the song. What I really find interresting are the lead melodies of the guitar. Even if the song is very catchy, there is a lot of different riffs and the energy isn't always the same during the song. There are a lot of variations. Every single instrument as a very important role in the song. Even the vocals brings something quite interresting to the song. Guitarist and lead vocalist Kele Okereke, really takes us where he wants us to go, with emotions in his playing and vocals. An interresting song by an interresting band :)

Song Of The Week #3

Artist : The Human Abstract
Track : Breathing Life Into Devices

The Human Abstract is a Progressive Metalcore band, also refered to as Mathcore sometimes. The Human Abstract can really match together the greatest of the technicality that some Metal bands have with the melodic world of Metalcore. The first one minute and a half of the song is the heaviest part of the song, with many breakdowns mixed with technical guitar riffs, you can really feel the true meaning of Progressive Metalcore. After this part of the song, the band leaves all agressivity behing and come in with very melodic core vocals, keayboard and beautiful guitar riffs. I personnaly really appreciate the emotions the vocalist can make us feel. The very frequent variations into the tempo and different riffs and energy is really interresting. Breathing Life Into Devices is my personnal favorite by The Human Abstract

Artist : Origin
Track : The Aftermath

Origin is a band that can be classified as Brutal Technical Death Metal.
Their music is really fast and agressive. I would only recommend Origin to those who already are in Death Metal music, because their music is very complexe and there is so many notes played by so many instruments at the same moment that it can get confusing.

The sweep part at 1:17 and the 1st riff, especially the part just before the sweep kicks in is my favorite part of the song.
The Aftermath sets the tone for the whole album, which is pretty much worth it.

(the version on YouTube as a very bad sound quality)
